This glacier is not the largest in the area but it is extremely accessible. The glacier is stable however it is receding, and has been recorded to be receding faster in the last 30 years. We took a bus from El Calafate and were there in just under two hours with great views of the glacier as we approached.
Los Glaciares National Park have built a boardwalk all around the glacier so you can pretty well see it from every angle - and as you can see - we photographed it from nearly all the angles! Amazing!
Every now and then, we heard loud crashes - like thunder or gunshots - and pieces of ice would fall into the water below. We saw an enormous piece fall just as we were tucking into our sandwiches; it looked very similar to this bit of footage.
